The Breeder is pleased to present Because Now, Eleni Gkinosati’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Her process begins with spontaneous curiosity taking the lead, before thought or intention steps in. Inspired by raw materials and unrefined emotional encounters, Gkinosati responds to an innate need for change, in the most literal sense.

The sight of an unconventional piece of fabric or an ordinary hue of blue can ignite a transformative process. Just as a person may be altered by the love of another, she seeks to provoke emotional shifts, reshaping collective feeling through her work.

Her oeuvre emerges from the dynamic tension between conscious action and subconscious impulse. This is a non-verbal, instinctual process rooted in artistic expertise, muscle memory and a persistent urge toward reformulation and creation. Her relationship with painting is reciprocal, perpetual and ever-evolving, balancing volatility with deliberate technique. While color palettes may occasionally reoccur, no two works can ever be the same. Opposing repetition and imitation, Gkinosati embraces rebirth with every blank canvas.

Her colors are reminiscent of wounding, collision, and fragility, while simultaneously drawing from nature and its shifting images. She feels the need to find her place in the vast space of a blank surface, using broad gestures to navigate its large scale and uncover the work concealed within fluctuating dimensions. The canvas becomes her operating space for the dissection of the inner psyche. Paint and color transition through familiar yet uncanny figures and shapes.

Gkinosati’s explorations engage with themes of self-actualization, constant transformation, and the ambiguity of intangible forms, inviting viewers to fill in the blanks left by the abstract nature of her artistic style. Each painting functions like an X-ray of her inner world while also posing as a mirror, reflecting the viewer’s own visual memory and lived experience. Eluding direct narratives, she is interested instead in the decisiveness of encounter, how each person, shaped by their own perspective, uncovers a different story within the same work. Whether the viewer is appalled by the remnants of her intestinal forms or sympathizes with her prismatic outbursts, the work has reached the core of its intention. Ultimately, her practice underlines the subtle yet profound influence of the unseen.
