CURRENT Athens is an online platform for the non-hierarchical promotion of contemporary art.
CTRL+ τ is an initiative aimed at mobilising emerging local and international artists to deploy their artistic practice and develop a work in progress. Throughout the year and for a specific period, different artists are given control of T.A.F.’s physical and virtual space, in order to elaborate upon the concept of CTRL+τ with absolute freedom in terms of research methodology and artistic means.
Shaping new memories to restore old ones? Albane Gayet, born in 1994 and graduate of Central Saint Martin’s, London, she leaves for Athens for six months as part of the A-Dash residency, with a precise idea, that of portraying the Greek capital through the places of her childhood of which she keeps a very clear memory. Her house, her best friend’s house, a swimming pool, a garden. She lived there from 2004 to 2007. The artist starts a geographical and memorial quest, that she plans ahead: videos of her wanderings, to which are added the reading of texts written later on, scans of plants at different stages of decomposition, panoramic photos of the city in which she appears partially, sometimes, "Selfies", obvious or suggested self-portraits, a presence in the background. Always carrying her mobile phone and two cameras – 180° and 360° – she uses the spontaneous codes of popular imagery and frees herself from all technical constraints. The use of these tools voluntarily gives to her work a modest visual approach, an "aesthetic poorness" of everyday life. Through the title of one of her series, "I will bring back photographs, these will be my memories", an inner and singular journey is revealed. More than a notebook, this work is the result of a diarist practice, that of the journal. She throws images and texts into it, and will only put them in order once she returns to Paris. A beautiful attempt to measure time animates Albane Gayet, that of capturing a present memory that slips away instantly.
