The Municipal Gallery of Mykonos "Maria Iglesi" inaugurates on Friday 11 August 2023 at 19:00 Giannis Efthimiou’s exhibition PAPERPULP FICTIONS curated by Alexia Pappa.

The painter presents his work for the first time in Mykonos and installs his colourful paper pulp universe of surreal landscapes and peculiar knight tales in Kalogera Hall for ten days. The artworks are made entirely of paper pulp and they are created all at once, as the construction of the paper leaves no room or time for any afterward intervention or change in the work. The surface of the work and the composition are thus determined altogether, as Efthimiou doesn’t do studies or drafts, but works spontaneously and instinctively.

"In this new body of work, he combines landscape paintings, close-ups of his favourite heroes, horses, and riders, and repetitive motifs. Efthimiou's paintings balance between childishness and irony, and incorporate both historical and pop references," the curator notes.

ΒΙΟ

Giannis Efthimiou was born in Korinthos, Greece in 1990. 

He studied sculpture and painting at the School of Fine Arts in Pyrgos, Tinos, where he first came in touch with sculpturing and painting, and at the Athens School of Fine Arts.

He received honorary distinctions during his studies and he graduated from ASFA in 2017 with excellence (100%). In 2016 he won the “Spyropoulos Prize” for Young Artist of the Year, which was awarded by the Spyropoulos Foundation. In 2017 he was awarded the 2nd Prize for young artists by the Hellenic General Insurance Company.  He presented two solo shows in 2020 and 2022 at Evripides Art Gallery, Athens, and he has participated in various group exhibitions. His works can be found in private collections in Greece, Switzerland, and the USA. He lives and works in Athens, Greece.
