Local Culture returns to mark, complicate, re-appropriate another symbolically charged day: 28 October, ο Επέτειος του Όχι, Ohi Day, No Day.

To be complicated: Patriarchal culture, masculinist defiance, occluded histories of fascism.

To be advanced: Discourse on politics of consent, as articulated in a local and global context where femicides occur all too often, where violence against trans women, violence against queer migrants and refugees is grossly normalised.

After the performance, the audience is encouraged to stay for an open conversation on the legacy of 28 October 1940, queer practices of disidentification, coalitional feminism, performance and artistic practice.

Local Culture is an ongoing, collective project in residence at Sub Rosa Space. Consisting of Sub Rosa's staff and invited performers (professional and amateur alike), the group makes short works that complicate hegemonic understandings of national, regional, and local culture. Often taking national holidays as the impetus for research and creation, Local Culture adopts a critical performativity as method--questioning what distributions of authority across what symbolic structures reify norms of commemoration, and reiterate aesthetics and politics as each other. Always there is the interest in articulating these terms differently, in exposing their unspoken aspects, in proposing divergent means and even values of commemoration. The process is profoundly more important than the performance and significantly, Local Culture features as an integral aspect of Sub Rosa's internship program. The space's interns, whether coming from abroad or from within Greece, gain the opportunity to engage actively in the creative process; learn from peers living and working in the Athenian context; and are immersed in the Sub Rosa ethics of collaboration, typified by rigour, humility, and open dialogue.
