CURRENT Athens is an online platform for the non-hierarchical promotion of contemporary art.
Sara True Rosenthal is a multimedia artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. Born in California, she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from UC Santa Cruz and an MA in Performance, Design, and Practice from Central Saint Martins in London. She has studiedat a small art school on Paros island and at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. She has also lived and worked in Spain, where her research on the art of flamenco culminated in lectures at UCLA and the University of Memphis. Previously in Athens, she has worked collaboratively on a performance at Theatre Embros.
During her residency at Snehta, Sara has been making paintings, videos, and photographs. In this open studios exhibition we see the metaphorical aftermath of a feast.
Through a process of cultural investigation into the feminine and the sacred Sara questions the meaning or non-meaning of everyday ritual. Taking inspiration from Greek myths and rituals such as cults of Dionysus and the Eleusinian Mysteries, her practice invokes an “ecstatic engine of creation”. To reach this state, she employs trance-inducing techniques such as durational repetition and meditation. In one work in process, she performs the same song for over three hours in an attempt to liberate the individual to
return to a natural state. The purpose of this experimentation in her work is to reveal ideas of chaos and time - typical elements of contemporary city life. These are displayed here through abstract paintings and love letters in the form of dying vegetables.
