Shadows in the bright world of the liberal individual man
The conquest of “individuality” appears to be the supreme value that our modern societies are proud of. Indeed, words such as “individual initiative”, “personal happiness”, “individual human rights”, “individual autonomy”, etc. are the most important reference points of our existence. The question is: Can modern independent individuals be involved in the bonds that make up a society and not just “inter-subjective” exchanges? Do we really and willingly recognize a social – moreover: a political - dimension to our precious “individuality”? Or do we consider it to be sufficiently secured by the conclusion of “social contracts”, the establishment of technological systems of mediation and a “procedural” democracy? Do we ignore this dimension to such an extend that the social and the political are “returning” to our lives in the form of outrageous totalitarian manifestations? Using as a tool the French anthropologist Louis Dumont's analysis of modern “individualism”, we will try to clarify some of the darkest aspects of these questions.
