Stoa 42 is pleased to present Πανικός a solo exhibition and performance by Éric Stephany.
For several years, Eric Stephany explores the way in which architecture affects us and how, in turn, we project back this affect onto the architectural objects. For the artist, this is related to empathy, following the romantic concept of Einfühlung, which refers to our tendency to cast back our subjective and emotional life on objects and to identify with them. As a projection of our subjectivity on objects, empathy is essential in understanding the ways in which we inhabit space. His sculptural gestures, collages, films and performances seek a series of ambivalent emotions or states of mind like fear, sadness, anticipation, awe or love.
For the exhibition, Πανικός at Stoa42 Eric Stephany will present a new body of work produced during the last two years of his permanence in Athens. Πανικός in an attempt to define love through paradoxical definitions expressed in sculptural, linguistic and performative forms. The exhibition is the occasion to release the second stanza of Stephany's Neon Love Poem as well as a new series of marble sculptures.
Stephany will also present a performance, entitled “L’esprit d’escalier” (2019) that will take place during the evening of the opening. The performance is a staircase dance for one person in six scores. "L'esprit d’ Escalier" is a French term used for the predicament of thinking too late of the perfect reply.
Stephany’s work has been widely exhibited: Air de Paris (Paris, FR), Hussenot (Paris, FR), Obadia (Marseille, FR), Torri (Paris, FR), Exile Gallery (Vienna, AT), and Atelier Kunst Spiel Raum (Berlin, DE), Marianne Boesky (NY, US), Béton Salon (Paris, FR), Glassbox, Ferme du Buisson (Noisiel, FR), Fondation d'Entreprise Ricard (Paris, FR), ISCP (NY, US), Museo Nivola (Orani, IT), at the French Institutes of Prague (CZ) and of Athens (GR), at the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum (Berlin, DE), and at the Centre George Pompidou (Paris, FR).
