Open Call for Workshop
“Filming in the Last Days of the City Workshop”
Apply by 11 June 2018
The Laboratory for the Urban Commons invites students, filmmakers, artists, researchers, activists, and people who want to re-imagine the city, to participate in its upcoming workshop led by Tamer El Said on Friday 22 June 2018. The workshop will be held at the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens.
The workshop follows the screening of the film In the Last Days of the City (2016) in the presence of the director Tamer El Said at the Greek Film Archive, on Thursday 21 June 2018, at 8.30 pm. For more information on the screening and the director, please visit our website luc-athens.org. *(https://luc-athens.org/screening/)
This all-day workshop will explore the ways in which we imagine and depict our cities through artistic and cinematic practices, by developing alternative approaches and methodologies between and beyond fiction and documentary. Together with Tamer El Said, who shot his film in Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad and Berlin, we would like to invite our participants to explore these experiences as a tool to be used in the local context of Athens.
In order to participate in our workshop, we kindly ask you to send us a short statement describing your current activities and areas of interest along with a short bio to:
participate@luc-athens.org by Monday 11 June 2018
The selected participants will be invited to the screening of In the Last days of the City at the Greek Film Archive and will be requested, prior to the workshop, to provide us with footage and/or excerpts of films that will then be utilised by Tamer El Said as part of the workshop.
Through its future programming of screenings and workshops, the Laboratory for the Urban Commons would like to initiate a non-formal educational process that along with its participants will set up the conditions for critical moving image research, development and production.
The Laboratory for the Urban Commons is a collective that develops and produces research, artistic practices, urban interventions and education. This broad composition of people desires the re-imagination of the everyday through research-led tactics and non-formal and informal strategies. The Laboratory for the Urban Commons operates by creating a self-testing and self-generating area for research and production, developing methods that initiate, document and expand forms of critical discourse, in parallel to the unfolding of counter-hegemonic social and artistic practices. Looking towards an extended Mediterranean with solidarity and anticipation, the Laboratory for the Urban Commons is operating out of Athens.
For more information on both the workshop and the screening, visit luc-athens.org or email us at contact@luc-athens.org.
