Alkinois, Georgia René-Worms and Alix Janta are pleased to present A house is not a home, the first solo exhibition of Marianne Berenhaut in Greece.

Marianne Berenhaut, born in 1934, Brussels, Belgium. Lives and works in Brussels and London. Through a vast body of work spanning over 60 years, Marianne Berenhaut has created a unique visual language addressing the themes of nostalgia, trauma, absence, and memory. Her sculptures are composed of objects found in her immediate surroundings. As Nadine Plateau writes in conversation with Marianne Berenhaut: “Throughout her career, she has gathered and balanced, often precariously, used or even broken objects, which she has continually tended to, mended, and regenerated with both gravity and tenderness, regardless of the materials employed. This is because, following a serious accident that forever prevented her from handling heavy objects, she had to invent a new way to sculpt.” “ A House Is Not a Home” presents two foundational pieces from the series “Poupées poubelles, 1971-1980”, and traces back her work through pieces from the 1980s-1990s, including the series “ Vie Privée ”, up to some of her most recent pieces. By showcasing sculptures from various eras, this exhibition is conceived as a perspective rather than a retrospective. Having graduated from the Académie du Midi and the Atelier de Moeschal in the 1960s, she has held various solo exhibitions in different art spaces and institutions: La Maison des Femmes (Brussels), Island (Brussels), Belgium Jewish Museum (Brussels), MAC’s Grand Hornu (Belgium), as well as in Isy Brachot Gallery (Brussels), and Nadja Vilenne Gallery (Liège). She has participated in several group exhibitions, including at Maison Grégoire (Brussels), Gladstone Gallery (Brussels), Bureau des réalités (Brussels), and Carl Freedman Gallery (Margate, UK). In 2020, she had a solo exhibition at M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) and a retrospective at CIAP (Genk) in 2021. Her works are part of numerous collections, including MUHKA, Belgium; Museum of Ixelles, Belgium; Frac Grand Large, France; and Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Germany.
