Cristina de Miguel's approach to painting celebrates its materiality. Images of women celebrating their own bodies by dancing in clubs and shaking their butts in front of fans remind us of life's banality. At the same time, they recall the feeling of internal isolation, to the point that thoughts take over the body until it melts into paint.
“I want to make paintings that evoke emotions through their physicality. Paintings that are about painting. In order to achieve this, I use bodies that melt physically, in the same way paint drips and melts too.” - Cristina de Miguel
Her deep and innate sentiments are always expressed in a playful tone with the use of her colorful palette, resulting in an expressive and often exaggerated anatomy of figures, seemingly spontaneous but actually well-studied. In this absurd univerese she creates, she generously offers a much-needed neo-expressionistic female gaze on a male dominated world.
