Join us for a screening of Georgia Sagri's video "Semiotics of the Household", 2018 to be followed by a discussion between the artist and curator Mari Spirito, Executive Director and Curator of Protocinema on navigating the contemporary time-based and performance practices.
Undisciplined artist -a term she uses to characterise her practice, and a founding organiser of the Occupy Wall Street movement, Georgia Sagri’s social activism, alongside her multifaceted work and public performances, dates back to 1999 with her memorable performance Polytechnic 1999, in Athens. Sagri since then has organised the perambulatory curatorial project SALOON and the audio-only magazine Forté since 2009. In 2013 she initiated the semi-public and semi-personal space Ύλη[matter]HYLE in Athens, with the mission to develop a new model for the contemporary work-life structure. She has exhibited and participated in documenta 14 (2017), Manifesta 11 (2016), Istanbul Biennial (2015), La biennale de Lyon (2013), Whitney Biennial (2012), Thessaloniki Biennale (2011), and the Athens Biennale (2007). In 2019 Sagri was appointed Tenure professor of Performance Art in the School of Fine Arts in Athens. Recent solo exhibitions are “GEORGIA SAGRI GEORGIA SAGRI” at Kunstverein Braunschweig (2017-2018), and “GEORGIA SAGRI and I” at Portikus, Frankfurt am Main (2018) both curated by Christina Lehnert. Current and upcoming projects include "IASI" Mimosa House, London (Jan-Mar 2020); Tavros, Athens (Mar-May 2020); De Appel, Amsterdam (April 2020 - 2021), "Time is Thirsty" curated by Luca lo Pinto at Kunsthalle Wien (until Jan 2020), "Bizarre Silks, Private Imaginings and Narrative Facts, etc.” an exhibition by Nick Mauss at Kunsthalle Basel (2020).
Mari Spirito is Executive Director and Curator of Protocinema, since 2011, a cross-cultural art organisation commissioning and presenting site-aware works, based in Istanbul and New York. She was faculty for Independent Curators International (ICI) Curatorial Intensive, Bangkok, 2018; curator of Conversations for both Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach from 2013 to 2018; Director of Alt Art Space, Bomonti, Istanbul from 2015 to 2017; Advisor to the 2nd Mardin Biennial, Turkey, 2012; and Director of 303 Gallery New York, 2000 - 2012. She is on the Board of Participant, Inc, New York, and holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston.
