In this exhibition, Eleanor showcases her latest series of silkscreen prints, which she has been making over the past year. After completing an artist residency in the central Athens district of Kypseli in 2016, she became interested in the rich 20th century architectural history of the area, which was influenced by the Bauhaus, Modernist and Art Deco movements. The area now has a feeling of faded grandeur, and these influences are often overlooked. She drew inspiration from the various motifs found in the interiors and exteriors of modernist Athenian apartments, such as their herringbone parquet flooring and art deco metalwork grilles.

Using the language of formal abstraction, these geometric and tessellating motifs are simplified, replicated and reconfigured through a playful process of digital drawing, creating new spatial arrangements, which isolate them from their origins. Process is fundamental to her practice, and by translating these into silkscreen, further transformations take place, as colour then plays a key role.

The strong Athenian light, the sun faded balcony canopies, the pink evening skies, and vivid colours of the surrounding sea and landscape, have all inspired her rich colour palette. Influenced by Josef Albers’ ‘Interaction of Colour,’ endless colour exercises take place in the studio in preparation for the prints. This becomes a meditative process as she searches for the right balance and contrast between them. Printed gradients, and contrasting block colours set these geometric forms off against one another, creating rhythmic and optical qualities.
