CURRENT Athens is an online platform for the non-hierarchical promotion of contemporary art.
The exhibition features retrospectively projects produced for the UWA architectural studios held in Athens from 1995-96 till 2017 and coordinated by Professors Kalliope Kontozolgou and Nigel Westbrook.
From the pre-Olympic Athens, to Athens in crisis and eventually future Athens, the students who have participated in these study abroad design workshops seek to envision possible transformations of the city. These workshops aim to go beyond the usual picturesque or touristic consumption of the exotic, and instead instill a confrontation with the multilayered and complex city in a state not just of crisis, but also of rapid change. Thus, the topic of Studio 2017 was Neapolis: Nea Polis and was organized as part of the Hellenic American Union’s initiative for the preservation of the historic Athenian district. In their projects, which are included in the exhibition, the students envision the future Neapolis in its public spaces, forgotten corners, decaying buildings and hidden gardens.
