CURRENT Athens is an online platform for the non-hierarchical promotion of contemporary art.
Hyper Hypo invites you to the presentation of the self-published editions "Ikaria" and "Kalymnos", from an ongoing project by photographer and videographer Eva Balassi. Published as small-format books, the first has already been successfully released, while the second will be presented for the first time at the event. The creator will talk about the larger travel and photography project, which is still in progress. A short documentary on Kalymnos, which complements the theme of the most recent of the two editions, will also be screened.
THE PRESENTATION WILL BE HELD IN GREEK
These two travel journals were born in 2022 (while traveling during lockdown) from Balassi's need to continue exploring, be inspired, and observe despite the adversities of the time.
In her words: "For me, Ikaria means freedom, a new beginning, and rejuvenation. Having been away —due to global circumstances— for two years from my favorite island, I felt the need to visit it again and document it both photographically and experientially through the stories of the locals I recorded."
She continues: "The book on Kalymnos has a different story. It smells of the sea, iodine from the sponges, oregano from the mountains, and stories from people who have made their livelihoods from sponge diving. This second book has just been completed, and I can't wait to share it with the public."
Eva Balassi was born in Athens in 1990. In 2008, she moved to Corfu to study at the Department of Audio and Visual Arts at the Ionian University. She soon realized that photography and videography were her passion. Since 2014, she has been working as a photographer and filmmaker for fashion brands and projects in Greece and abroad. Her book "Ikaria" is already in its third edition
