The Center for the Study of Modern Pottery presents the exhibition Pott /Pott by Symptom Projects from December 17th, 2022 to January 7th, 2023.

Pott/Pott is part of a series of exhibitions by the Symptom Projects under the title 'The folk Tradition' which set out to explore and investigate the folk tradition and its different facets through the prism of contemporary thought and aesthetics. The present exhibition takes as its subject the artistic dimension of the art of traditional pottery.

Through the artists' works, but also through the catalogue texts the exhibition attempts to pin down a particular concern in the potter's work which extends beyond its utilitarian scope and nature. The abundance of colours, theĀ  glazing techniques, the strange shapes (for instance the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic pots) all testify to something which exists beyond the obvious truth of the object, something more akin to the perverse side of aesthetic pleasure.

Through their own ceramic works, the participating artists all enter into a dialogue on an equal basis with a particular traditional vase of their choice: They identify the artistic merits and elements of the original ceramics, point out the eccentric indulgences of their makers and retrace them in their own work. Their approach is not formalistic, but an abstract, reflective exploration of the gestures which exist in the traditional work, which are brought to light.
