The goal of the exhibition is to highlight how Moralis’ liberal teaching style shaped his students, leaving in his wake not simply followers but independent artists, students both male and female, who chose radically different paths.
The exhibition displays paintings by only some of Moralis many students: works that date either from their time as students or immediately following, juxtaposed with their mature creations in an attempt, on the one hand, to show how they evolved as artists away from their teacher’s shadow, and, on the other hand, to underscore the many different directions that these students actually took.
This exhibition presents paintings by certain of Moralis's students: Marilena Aravantinou, Nikos Kessanlis, Stavros Baltoyannis, Dimitris Condos, Demosthenis Kokkinides, Dimitris Mytaras, Nestor (Papanikolopoulos), Pepi Svoronou, Alecos Fassianos, Rena Papaspyrou, Vangelis Dimitreas, Vasso Kyriaki, Makis Theophylaktopoulos, Chronis Botsoglou, Nikos Paralis, Giorgos Ziakas, Kyriakos Katzourakis, Triantafyllos Patraskides, Zacharias Arvanitis, Yannis Kottis, Thanassis Makris, Olivia Michali, Kostas Papanikolaou and Marilitsa Vlahaki. The works displayed date from the period of their studies and are juxtaposed with their mature creations, in an effort to highlight, on the one hand, how they evolved away from the shadow cast by their teacher; and, on the other hand, the very varied directions which these artists took.
The artists shown were not chosen either as a form of evaluation nor are they representative of the number of exceptional painters, who worked in Moralis's studio. Without in any sense affecting the significance of those included in the exhibition and, even further, of those who were not included, they were selected in order to represent the very expansive range of time Moralis taught at the School: from the end of the nineteen forties to the start of the nineteen eighties.
