The Benaki Museum’s exhibition dedicated to Demosthenis Skoulakis’s creative output over a period of nearly fifty years (1957-2014), is a journey revisiting the past which includes representative samples from the broad scope of his artistic career. The exhibition is divided into eight separate sections which follow the course taken by the artist thematically and chronologically. It includes approximately one hundred paintings beginning from his early period in 1957, the period of his political painting (1960-1967), his period of self-exile in Europe, America and Canada (1967-1972), and from the bulk of his work, which was done in Greece (1981-2014). Indicatively, his surrealist period (1980-1984), his portraits (1985-1996), his tribute to Tsarouchis (1988-1998), his underground routs (1993-1998) and his rewritings (1997-2009).

Demosthenis Skoulakis was one of the most important representatives of the generation of the 1970s, which was marked by the distancing of several Greek artists from abstraction and a return to reality.

The focus of his exploration was the human being, seen through a critical, realistic sociopolitical approach oriented towards the challenges articulated by youth movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated publication entitled Demosthenis Skoulakis . An Artist of Contradictions.
