The President of the Cycladic Art Museum, Sandra Marinopoulos, together with the Museum’s Director, Professor Nikos Stampolidis, visited Cy Twombly’s retrospective exhibition in Paris, which provided the inspiration to organize this extraordinary exhibition during the Documenta 14 in Athens.
The works of contemporary American artist Cy Twombly, inspired by Greek mythology and his own contact with Greece, will be presented alongside works of antiquity, for the first time, setting up a unique and original dialogue between ancient Greek and modern art.
Among the antiquities that will be exhibited, including the François Vase, a milestone in ancient Greek pottery development, which is to be presented outside of the Archaeological Museum of Florence for the first time. The François Vase has been to be characterized by a uniqueness that would make it evidence enough of Greek mythology and ancient Greek art, even if all other vessels perished.
The exhibition will be curated by Prof. Nikolaos Stampolidis, director of the Cycladic Art Museum and by Jonas Storsve, Curator at Centre George Pompidou in Paris, who curated the Cy Twombly retrospective hosted this year at the Centre.
